Looking for step-by-step instruction on how to achieve a salon-quality Paddy’s day manicure at home?
Step 1: Preparation
Shape your nails with a file. Go for an oval or squoval shape if you want an easy-to-wear option, or try an almond shape if you have some length to play with.
Push back your cuticles and use cuticle nippers to carefully remove the dead skin – make sure you don’t cut your skin!
With a nail buffer, gently buff the nail a few times. This will give the gel polish something to grip on to.
Cleanse your nail with some nail cleaner on a lint-free pad. This helps to remove the natural oils and debris from your nail that will cause your polish to lift.
Step 2: Paint
Apply a thin, even layer of base coat to your nail, and cure.
Take your favourite green shade and place a small amount of gel colour in the middle of your nail. Push the gel colour towards your cuticle, working the colour into your nail. Make sure you don’t get any of the polish on your skin – but if you do, make sure to remove it before curing. Apply a thin, even coat and cure.
Repeat this step until you’ve built up your desired opacity.
If you have any gems, decals or transfer foil to add on top, now’s the time!
These gold horseshoe nail ornaments will make your Paddy’s day mani extra special – and they might even bring you some luck! This is such a cute way to honour the Irish horseshoe tradition!
Green, gold, and orange are great accent colour choices for St Patrick’s Day nails.
Finish off your mani with a thin layer of top coat, cure, and wipe off the sticky inhibition layer with nail cleanser. If you have a no-wipe top coat, skip this last step.
Step 3: Aftercare
Wash your hands, apply a moisturising hand cream and follow it up with a nourishing cuticle oil to lock in that moisture!
If you want to try your hand at doing your own manicures, our starter kit has all of the essential items you’ll need.
The kit comes with:
This kit has all of the necessary basics covered, but if you want to be extra, pick up a pair of cuticle clippers, a cuticle oil and a few nail files in different grits too!

Tip 1: Use a Nail Cleanser
Natural oils and dirt will prevent the gel from bonding properly to your nail – which will result in a short-lived mani. Use a specially formulated nail cleanser on a lint-free pad to make your mani last longer.
Tip 2: Cap the Free Edge
To prevent chipping and extend the life of your mani, brush the gel polish along the tip of your nail after painting it. This will also give a professional look to your manicure.
Tip 3: Practice!
It takes time and practice to get really good at something, so if your first attempt doesn’t go so well, just keep trying! Practice on your friends, your mum … and even your man if he’ll let you!
